Mill

An authentic windmill, “De Immigrant”, or Immigration Memorial, was inaugurated in 2001 on the occasion of the colony’s 50th anniversary celebrations as a tribute to Dutch immigrants. Architect Jan Heijdra, a windmill specialist, was responsible for building the 37-meter-high monument with a wooden structure without the use of nails.

The mill is a full-size replica of the “Woldzigt” mill, http://www.molendatabase.nl/nederland/molen.php?nummer=26 located in the province of Drenthe (northern Netherlands), the region from where most of the immigrants came.

In addition to the wind-powered milling facilities, the mill also houses a permanent historical exhibition, an events hall, a café-restaurant, a craft shop and a library. At the entrance, you can see and listen to an authentic barrel organ: a type of hand-cranked organ.
